Why Insight Meditation?

We offer teachings and guidance based on Insight Meditation, which is rooted in the  Buddhist tradition and has direct relevance to our lives today. The Buddha trained his followers in ethical conduct, mental discipline and wisdom. He encouraged them to connect with their innate capacity for kindness, compassion, joy and balance.

The habits and patterns that give rise to suffering and misery have built up over a long period of time. It follows that they’re not going to disappear overnight. Our practice requires a sustained effort, a long-term commitment to the process of waking up. The process of liberation unfolds over time.

Liberation in this context means being able to stand in the midst of all events and experiences with unshakeable balance, caring for others and fully engaged with the world.

Anger, fear, anxiety, resentment, greed, envy, depression, grief and ill-will all cause us suffering. Freeing ourselves from suffering doesn’t mean denying these mind states or pushing them away. The challenge is being with them in a skilful way, in a way that transforms them.

The cultivation of kindness and compassion isn’t about becoming a nicer person; these qualities directly counteract our tendency to be dissatisfied and unhappy. They help us to master the art of living well.

Insight meditation is open and accessible to people of any religious affiliation or none. Everyone is welcome.
